NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The City of New Brunswick celebrated the Fourth of July a little early this year, with a joint fireworks display coordinated with the Boro of Highland Park.

Fireworks launched from the Boro’s Donaldson Park could be seen clearly from all over the city, as crowds gathered atop several of the city’s parking decks.

The official city celebration took place in Boyd Park, and featured live music from the Voodudes.  It also marked the first public appearance of the city’s new seven-member auxiliary police force, which helped with crowd control.

According to an article on NJ.com, the fireworks were moved to Donaldson Park when construction of Route 18 prevented the display from being launched in Boyd Park, which is now too small.

The decision to host the fireworks on July 1, rather than on the actual holiday, was a cost-savings measure, according to the report.
