NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—According to media reports, Fire Director Robert Rawls has been issued two summonses for an accident he was involved in Tuesday afternoon in his city vehicle while on-duty.

A spokesperson for Mayor James Cahill told NJ.com that Rawls was charged with careless driving and failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Rawls, who makes a $155,053 annual salary and was appointed Fire Director in 2006, struck three children who were in a crosswalk at Livingston Avenue and Delavan Street on Tuesday afternoon.

As part of the job he has use of a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe sport utility vehicle, which was damaged in the accident.

The accident seriously injured three children, two 14-year-old girls and a 6-year-old boy.  Since the accident, hundreds of community members have protested demanding justice in the case.

The students were walking home from school, but the dangerous intersection had no crossing guard due to staffing shortages, a fact that fueled the protests that descended on City Hall and the county government this week.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s was put in charge of the investigation due to Rawls’ position with the city.

“I don’t think we’ll have a comment on it,” said James O’Neill, a spokesperson for Acting County Prosecutor Andrew Carey.

“The Prosecutor’s Office continues to investigate,” said Cahill spokesperson Jennifer Bradshaw.
